Causes of cracking

So we said that large amounts of concrete experience a large change in temperature when it first hardens, and this may cause cracks -- dams are large amounts of concrete!

There are lots of other things that cause cracks in dams, too:
  • temperature changes during the seasons
  • settling of the ground the dam is on
  • earthquakes
  • ice and waves
  • and lots more!
So a concrete dam could get a crack in it a couple of different ways. But will the crack grow?

If we look at a dam from the side, there is alot of water in the back, where the reservoir is, and little or no water in the front.

If there's a crack on the side without water, do you think the crack will grow?
