Here is a simulation of a
crack growing in a dam because of the force of the water.

Note that the water is on the left side of the dam. The crack is also
on the left.

and so is the crack.

dam that is cracked in two places, one on the right and one on the left.
Note that the water is on the left and only the crack on the left grows.
