buttress
A buttress in a concrete buttress dam is a thin structure projecting from the
upstream face (the side where the water is). Each buttress is almost
triangular. On the upstream side of the buttress is the buttress head.
The buttress supports the buttress head.
The buttresses are shaded in yellow below.
