Poisson's ratio gives you an idea of how much a material will shrink in
one direction if you pull it in the other direction.
When the box on the left is pulled vertically, it gets longer and
thinner. Poisson's ratio describes how much thinner and longer the
box gets when it is pulled, depending on what material it is made of.
