Fluid Flow

Golf ball Trajectory Simulation Applet

A golf ball is strongly influenced by aerodynamic forces. Golfers discovered that the golf ball flew farther when it had dimples. These "conventional" golf balls have either 330 or 336 round dimples placed in regular rows. A "hexagonally" dimpled ball, which has 290 "hexagonal" dimples and 12 "pentagonal" dimples, will fly even farther. Also by imparting a back spin to the ball, golfers found they could increase the range of the flight. The launch angle will also influence the ball's flight-path and range.
