Advanced Membranes

Food, energy and life

In this module we have often mentioned the importance of energy in determining the state of the a membrane. Energy is also of critical importance to life for its survival - if you don't take on energy by eating and drinking, you will die.

Any living cell has a constant flow of chemicals though the cell wall. This flow is needed to transfer raw materials to the `factories' in the cell and to remove the waste materials. For the cell to keep all these processes working it requires a constant flow of energy. The precise properties of the cell membrane and various proteins within it control this flow of chemicals.
